Aftermath of a bombing raid on London, October 1940

How would you have felt about sheltering in an Anderson shelter during an air raid?

Air Raids

Families who had a garden often had an Anderson shelter. These shelters came as a kit of six sheets of steel which had to be bolted together and partly dug into the ground. There was no floor or door and they were usually damp. After heavy rain they often flooded completely.

Other kinds of shelters included the Morrison shelter, which was put up inside the house, brick shelters that the local council built, or if you lived in London, the London Underground. Some people even sheltered in caves.
