Women
who had served in the armed forces were demobbed at the end of the
Second World War. Most women who had been conscripted into war work
lost their jobs to men returning from the war. The immediate post-war
years saw more emphasis placed on family life and women's role as
home-makers. The movement for women's liberation has led to greater
freedom and equality for British women since the late 1960s.
Women's
branches of the British services have continued to exist, although
they cannot do all of the same jobs as men.
During the Cold
War peace and disarmament organisations grew in response to the
nuclear threat. Women have played a significant role in these movements
including CND and Greenham Common. Equally, women have played a
greater role in terrorist, guerrilla and liberation movements.
