DIG FOR VICTORY: WAR ON WASTE
22 May – 30 September 2008

Dig for Victory garden

The Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms and The Royal Parks are promoting sustainability and recycling at a Second World War-themed allotment, open in St James’s Park from 22 May 2008.

Following the success of the pilot Dig for Victory allotment project collaboration between The Royal Parks and the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms in 2007, we will be replanting the allotment with an emphasis this year on our core themes of recycling and wildlife conservation.

Dig for Victory was a Second World War campaign to help combat food shortage in Britain by promoting the planting of allotments in gardens and on public land. The campaign addressed issues that we are concerned about today - having access to fresh healthy food, being active and living sustainably.

To complement the Dig for Victory allotment in St James's Park, there will be a thought-provoking exhibition inside the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms entitled ‘Make do and mend, the War on Waste’. Visitors will be transported back in time as they enter a 1940s clothing exhibition dedicated to the principles of 'make, do and mend'. Learn more about clothes rationing, utility clothing and Dior’s ‘New Look’, as well as modern approaches to recycling clothes.

Local communities and schools will be actively involved, participating in a series of activities running across both sites from May to September 2008.

The Dig for Victory allotment is open to visitors seven days a week from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

The Museum is open 9:30 am – 6:00 pm (final admission at 5:00 pm) and includes a free Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms Sound guide available in eight languages.

Visitors to the allotment and the Museum who complete a Dig for Victory: War on Waste competition questionnaire will be entered in to our monthly draw for a chance to win tickets to the Duxford Air Show, City Cruises riverboat tickets and entry to the London Zoo.
