Q 27846

This photograph, showing two women manufacturing shell cases at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, in May 1918, succeeds both as a historical record and as propaganda.

G P Lewis was one of two photographers appointed by the Ministry of Information to cover Britain’s war effort and the contribution of women to the workforce. His work shows the variety of tasks undertaken by women as well as their ability to cope with arduous conditions.
