The Royal Flying Corps, and its successor the Royal Air Force, made considerable use of photography in aerial reconnaissance missions - but their photographers also recorded the rapid evolution of the service during the course of the First World War.
Lieutenant David McLellan, formerly a photographer with the Daily Mirror, was one of the most talented. His photograph of Handley Page bombers at Dunkirk, 20 April 1918, is a record of the birth of the Royal Air Force’s strategic bombing force.
