Florence Farmborough was teaching in Moscow in 1914. She volunteered for the Russian Red Cross and after training was sent to a unit on the front line. She nursed in Poland, Austria and Roumania and was caught up in the chaos of the Russian retreat. She recorded her often gruesome experiences in her diaries and in  photographs. Florence Farmborough left Russia after the 1917 Revolution.

Buchach, June, 1916. We stay in attendance of the dying when we can trusting they will find comfort in our presence. A coffin, one of a small stock kept in readiness by our carpenters, stands ominously round the corner
