William Martin and Emily Chitticks

William Martin met Emily Chitticks in August 1916. They were engaged two months later. Martin was killed in France by a sniper on 27 March 1917. Unaware that Will was dead, Emily started to write to him in red ink the day after he was killed. Five of her letters were returned to her. Emily died in 1974 having never married. In her will she requested that their letters should be buried with her.
